I thought this was going to be a corny, simplistic demonisation of Trump, but to my surprise it actually adds depth and nuance to it, exploring the corrupting influence of Roy Cohn on his mind and psyche. If anything, the deeply realized performance by Sebastian Stan – who should have won every award given to Rami Malek for what I would say was a worse biopic performance – makes the young Trump more relatable, if not always sympathetic. Jeremy Strong is also excellent as is Roy Cohn. The entire cast is uniformly strong. And the portrayal of the New York period was stunning and gripping. Frankly, I am shocked that this film almost never saw the light of day. Trump would be happy to see himself as a morally ambiguous figure in the recent tradition of the Roy family in “Succession” or Don Draper in “Mad Men.” Both Trump and Cohn are emerging as great movie characters.
